Let’s face it: if you’re a woman over 40, you’ve probably had a moment in Sephora or scrolling through TikTok where you’ve thought, “What the hell is niacinamide, and why does this 22-year-old know more about my skin than I do?”
It’s true. Gen Z is out here dropping skincare knowledge like they’ve got PhDs in dermatology. They’re savvy, they’re ingredient-obsessed, and they’re challenging the status quo with the confidence of someone who’s never had to Google “how to remove a wine stain from a white couch.” Meanwhile, many of us in the 40+ club are over here like, “Wait, is retinol the one that makes me peel, or is that the one that makes me glow? Also, what’s glass skin, and do I need it?”
Here’s the thing: it’s not your fault. The last 15 years have been a blur of raising kids, climbing career ladders, or somehow doing both (shoutout to the superheroes among us). Skincare took a backseat to survival, and now we’re playing catch-up in a world where 10-step routines and “skin cycling” are the norm.
But let’s get real. You don’t need 27 products to have great skin. You don’t need to chase trends like “glass skin” (which, let’s be honest, is probably just a filter). What you need are the fundamentals: a solid routine, a few key products that actually work, and the confidence to ignore the noise.
Why Are We Falling Behind?
- Life Happened. Kids, careers, and the general chaos of adulthood meant skincare became an afterthought. While Gen Z was learning about hyaluronic acid on TikTok, we were Googling “how to survive a toddler tantrum in public.”
- Overwhelm is Real. The beauty industry has exploded with options. Cleansers, toners, serums, oils, masks—it’s enough to make your head spin. And when you’re overwhelmed, it’s easier to just buy the shiny thing the salesperson recommends.
- Trends vs. Truth. Skincare trends come and go faster than you can say “snail mucin.” It’s hard to know what’s legit and what’s just marketing hype.
How to Catch Up (Without Losing Your Mind)
- Keep It Simple. You don’t need a 10-step routine. Start with the basics: cleanse, moisturize, and protect (hello, SPF). Once you’ve got that down, you can add in targeted treatments like retinol or vitamin C.
- Know Your Ingredients. You don’t need to be a chemist, but it helps to know what’s in your products. Hyaluronic acid? Hydration hero. Retinol? Anti-aging powerhouse. Niacinamide? Basically a multitasking miracle worker.
- Invest in What Works. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but don’t be afraid to splurge on products that deliver results. And no, you don’t need to buy everything at once. Build your routine slowly.
- Ignore the Hype. Glass skin? Slugging? Skin cycling? Trends are fun, but they’re not mandatory. Focus on what makes your skin happy.
Why I’m Here
I get asked a lot, “What do you use? Your skin looks great!” And honestly, it’s not because I’ve cracked some secret code. It’s because I’ve learned to keep it simple, focus on what works, and ignore the noise.
This blog is my way of sharing what I’ve learned—not just about skincare, but about beauty, wellness, and navigating this wild ride of being a woman over 40. I’ll share my favorite products, tips, and tricks, along with the occasional rant about why adulting is so hard.
So, if you’re ready to simplify your routine, boost your confidence, and maybe laugh a little along the way, you’re in the right place. Follow me on instagram or TikTok, or check out my Substack for more spiritual musings (because why not?).
Let’s do this. Your best skin is ahead of you—no 10-step routine required.
